Woman dies in Lakewood duplex fire

A woman died Thursday night in a fire at a Lakewood duplex, West Metro Fire Rescue said in a post on its Facebook page.

The fire happened in a duplex unit in the 10300 block of West 13th Avenue near Kipling Street in Lakewood, the post said. The woman was identified as the resident of the unit, and crews believe that the cause of death is smoking while using an oxygen tank, West Metro fire Rescue spokeswoman Ronda Scholting said.

The woman’s neighbor returned from a grocery run when she heard a smoke alarm, the post said. When firefighters arrived, smoke was coming out of the unit and flames were visible in the front room. When firefighters entered the unit, they found the resident dead.

West Metro waited until 4:15 p.m. Friday to post the information on its social media accounts so that they could notify next of kin, Scholting said. The victim’s name and official cause of death won’t be released until an autopsy is completed.
