From a Buick 8 is the latest Stephen King project to get the big screen treatment in Hollywood. Actor Thomas Jane and producer Lauren Penn have formed a new production company, Renegade Entertainment, and their first project will be an adaptation of King’s 2002 novel. This marks a return of Jane to King’s universe, as he’s starred in several notable adaptations of the author’s work in the past.
According to a new report, Thomas Jane will producer From A Buick 8 along with Lauren Penn. There is no word just yet on who will be tapped to write or direct the adaptation, and it’s not clear if Thomas Jane will star, though that is hinted at. The book had previously been eyed as a possible movie for the late George A. Romero (Night of the Living Dead), but that version never truly got off the ground. More recently, Hyde Park Entertainment had been developing the project, but that fell apart as well. Jane and Penn had this to say about the project in a joint statement.
“From a Buick 8 is a thrilling and deeply personal project for us. As we explore a uniquely structured mystery spanning the 70s, 80s, 90s and post-9/11 era, centered around a son’s search for the truth behind his father’s sudden death. Along with first love and grief, terrifying and philosophic mysteries are spawned by inexplicable events connected to the titular car. We are honored that Stephen is supporting our vision of his brilliant, provocative novel.”
From A Buick 8 centers on Ned Wilcox whose father, a Pennsylvania state trooper, is killed in a senseless automobile accident. Ned soon discovers that the members of Troop D have a secret concealed behind their headquarters. His father’s friends and colleagues take turns relating the twenty-year history of the mysterious Buick Roadmaster locked in Shed B and how its discovery and mysterious behavior has captivated the group of men for 20 years. The Buick seems to be a gateway to an alternate reality and every now and then it breathes, taking in a bit of this world, and exhaling a little bit of wherever it came from.
Thomas Jane has starred in three previous Stephen King movies. 2003’s Dreamcatcher, 2007’s The Mist and Netflix’s 2017 adaptation of 1922. So this is an area Jane, who also stars in the hit sci-fi series The Expanse, is very familiar with. Jane, outside of acting, is a producer and also founded the graphic novel company RAW Studios in 2011.
Thanks largely to the success of IT, Stephen King properties have become hot-ticket items in Hollywood as of late. Elsewhere, adaptations of The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, Roadwork, The Long Walk, Salem’s Lot, Rest Stop, Mile 81 and The Talisman, amongst others, are all in the works as well. We’ll be sure to keep you posted as further details on the project are made available. This news comes to us via Deadline.
